To help us deliver the 'My Life My Care' initiative we are creating work opportunities in the community for those who have been peer carers, mentors or in positions of trust while in prison.

Based on previous experience gained since 2013 in developing our peer support programme in the South West, we will be launching this new initiative to help those who have served a custodial sentence obtain work experience.

Subject to funding, the work opportunities programme will commence in the South West and North West in May 2019, including South Wales and London for women. From May 2020, it will be cascaded to other regions in England and Wales.

We are seeking to recruit those who have been peer carers/buddies or peer mentors in prison to become volunteer peer support workers on release with the possibility of some progressing to paid work. We will also consider Orderlies who have had a supportive role, such as with prison healthcare or older people’s units/wings/groups. Acceptance on to the programme will be subject to our Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Policy. All applicants will be subject to risk assessment, agreement of their Offender Managers and successful completion of our training course. Those on the Sex Offender Register or subject to MAPPA will not be considered.

We are also seeking to recruit and train those with no criminal convictions to become Volunteer Care Support Workers or Mentors. There will be opportunities for some to progress to paid work. We are particularly interested in people who have lived experiences in successfully coping with relational difficulties.

Our Peer and Care Support Workers are not permitted to provide intimate personal care. Their role is to provide personal assistance with the goal of enabling independent living while reducing an escalation of care and the risk of re-offending. Applicants will be subject to Enhanced DBS checks.
